Graduation cap decorating!

It’s officially May, which means seniors and graduate students are counting down the days until they walk across the stage at graduation. While some are frantically studying for finals, others are casually crafting in their homes in hopes of winning the “Best Graduation Cap” title. My sister, Kassy, falls on the latter half of the spectrum. This Friday, Kassy will receive her degree from The University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy. She knew from her sophomore year in high school that she wanted to be a pharmacist, and eight long years later, she will have finally earned the title of Dr. Kassy Aragon, Pharm.D. I can’t express how proud I am of her!

When thinking about what she wanted to put on her cap, she knew she wanted to do something that meant a lot to her. Aladdin and Grey’s Anatomy quotes (a few of Kassy’s favorite things) floated around for awhile, but it wasn’t until we were dusting the bookshelf that she saw the “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” book by Dr. Seuss. It was a book that she read with our mom when we were younger that talks about the reader’s successes. Kassy knew this had to be the theme of her cap. So, we took to Pinterest and got to crafting!

We headed to Target to get a few supplies:

Glitter felt and scrapbooking letters

After we measured the cap, I drew a guide on another sheet of paper to use as stencils for the glitter felt.

Guide that we cut out for stencils. We made sure to take a picture and label the sections by color before we cut! it

Kassy cut out the glitter felt and painted the scrapbook letters teal to match the original art by Dr. Seuss. Then she hot glued them on and colored the background with Sharpies. Here is the final product:

Kassy’s final graduation cap!

Kassy wanted to personalize the design more than the book and the Pinterest inspiration, so she added a mortar and pestle with her name and degree above it. I love the way the cap came out and I know my mom will be a mess when she sees Kassy with it on!
